When you hear the word grace, what comes to mind? Do you think about how God’s grace covers all your sins? Do you think about how often you mess up and NEED his grace to wash over you? These ideas are true and oh-so-powerful! Praise the Lord for his never-ending mercy. When we make mistakes, he is quick to forgive and forget our shortcomings.
My friend, I have realized that there is even MORE. “What?” you ask. “More than being forgiven for all my sins past, present, and future?” Although I cannot even begin to fathom all that infinite forgiveness entails, when we are saved by grace, grace does even more than forgive our sins.
Think about it this way. If grace was only applied to forgive sins, then Jesus would not have needed grace. Right? Right. He was sinless, so he never needed forgiveness for sin. Yet the Bible tells us that the grace of God was upon Jesus.
Luke 2:40 NKJV – And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
God’s grace obviously didn’t rest upon Jesus so that He could be forgiven of sin. It rested upon Him to empower Him to live the life His father had planned for Him. The grace of God was the power that literally propelled Him into His destiny. No striving. No wondering whether He was doing it all right or not. He had the grace of God upon Him.
God’s grace took Him to the temple when He was twelve. Others didn’t understand it. But Jesus knew where He was supposed to be. The grace of God was upon Him.
Grace took Him to a wedding celebration in Cana where He turned water into wine. It took him to Jerusalem, where He burned with holy passion, turning over tables and healing all who were sick. Grace empowered him as He fed five thousand people by turning a few pieces of bread and a few fish into a meal for an army!
By grace He healed, delivered, and performed miracles. By grace He taught the people with great wisdom! By grace He called out the religious for their hypocrisy.
Grace led Him to the broken and the needy. Grace took Him to the children. Grace guided Him to the outcasts. Grace sent Jesus to the cross.
By the grace that was upon Him, he tasted death for me. He tasted death for you.
Hebrews 2:9 NKJV – But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
When Jesus came to earth He had the grace of God all over Him. The grace of God empowered Jesus to live a blameless life. He never faltered. He simply embraced the grace that was resting upon Him and went for it. And now we have all received His grace, because Jesus released the fullness of God’s grace to us through the cross.
Jhn 1:14-17 NKJV – And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth…And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, [but] grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Just like Jesus, you are empowered by the grace of God to fulfill all the plans God has for you. You don’t have to strive. You don’t have to fret over doing it right. You don’t have to worry that you’re not a good enough wife or mom. You don’t have to stress over doing it all perfectly.
Embrace His grace. As His grace rests upon you, decide today to rest in His grace. Decide today not to strive anymore. Simply rest in Him, knowing that He’s got you. Grace will do the work.
Psalm 138:8 [NLT] The LORD will work out his plans for my life–for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.
