Hello, graceful friend! It’s week 9 of New Places in Praise, and this week we are going to be filled with the Spirit! What does that mean?

Well, the Spirit of God (aka the Holy Spirit) is your Friend, your Teacher, and your Comforter. It feels great to be filled with the Spirit. He’s the One Who gives you joy and peace, and we all could use a little more of that. Don’t you think?

Let’s take a look at what Ephesians 5:18-19 says.

be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. – Ephesians 5:18b-19 NLT

When you sing praises to the Lord, it draws your attention toward His goodness. You are awakened to the reality of His presence. Where you may have been more aware of the busyness of your day, or even anxiety or fear of the future, when you begin to sing you become aware of the Holy Spirit. The hope He brings begins to fill every part of who you are.

This week, let’s make a point to explore different types of songs we can sing to Him. Let’s sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Let’s make music in our hearts to the Lord!

1. Psalms – Take out the Bible and find a Psalm that you really identify with. One that stands out to you. Sing that Psalm to Jesus!

2. Hymns – Sing a hymn to God.  If you need some inspiration, check out this video of Kim Walker-Smith singing How Great Thou Art.

3. Spiritual Songs – This phrase literally means a Spirit-breathed song. It is the New Testament version of tehillah–singing spontaneous songs (Week 6 :: Tehillah). You can sing in English or you can sing in tongues (more about that here). It is lots of fun!Questions

Let me take a moment to reiterate something. These are not praise “rules” to follow.  You don’t have to check off boxes #1, #2, and #3 to enjoy the presence of God and be filled with the Spirit.  We have access to all that He is because of what Jesus did on the cross for us! Praise the Lord for His abundant grace!

It’s just that when we explore new ways to praise, we might get to enjoy something new! God wants us to enjoy Him, and these are just ideas that might give you a fun, new way to spend time with God. Graceful mama, you are His favorite, and He can’t wait to spend time with you!

Week Nine Challenges:

Challenge #1: Take some time to sing to the Lord this week. Sing a psalm to Him. Sing a hymn to Him, or sing a spiritual song. Just sing! Let the melody fill your heart all throughout the week. Be filled with the hope that the Holy Spirit brings!

Challenge #2 (for moms with kids): Teach your kids a hymn or song that is special to you. Sing it together! (My oldest daughter LOVES Amazing Grace. Who knew?)

Week Nine Activation Prayer: God, fill me with Your Holy Spirit as I sing and make melody in my heart to you this week. I want to experience You! I want to not only learn facts about You, I want to really experience You! I want something real. God, you are amazing and good. Fill me with your hope. Let your hope replace every negative thought and feeling, God. I will sing praises to You!
