Five Reasons Why I Pray in the Spirit (#1 Edification)featured

Praying in the Spirit edifies me as a believer!

One reason that I pray in the Holy Spirit on a regular basis is that it edifies me and lifts me up.  Edification is necessary.  We need to be edified and encouraged as we walk out this life with purpose.

Ephesians 4:29 NKJV “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

The Apostle Paul writes in I Corinthians 14:4, “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…”

To edify means to instruct or benefit, especially morally or spiritually.

Hey mamas!  Anybody need a little spiritual instruction?  I know I do… and often.  And I know I am not one to turn down any spiritual benefits.  I need all of His benefits I can get!

Psalm 68:119 NKJV “Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation! SELAH”

To edify also means to uplift.

Mom, do you ever need someone to come along side you and lift you up when you’re feeling down?  Well then, you’re in luck!  Because Holy Spirit is here to be your cheerleader.  God wants you to be uplifted.

Psalm 3:3 NKJV “But You, O LORD, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.”

When you pray in tongues, you literally build a dwelling for Holy Spirit in yourself.

The New Testament was actually written for the first time in Greek, so it’s also helpful to look at the original meaning of words in the Greek in a Strong’s Concordance (or on a bible study site like Blue Letter Bible).  The word edifies means to be a house builder, that is, construct or confirm.  It comes from two words that mean “a dwelling”  and “to build”.

So… If “he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself,” then He who speaks in a tongue “builds a dwelling” or “builds a temple.”  Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit!  When you pray in tongues, you literally build a dwelling for Holy Spirit in yourself.  Yep!  That’s what it says.

God doesn’t live in temples built with human hands {Acts 7:48-51}.  He chooses to make His home in us!  God gives us the Holy Spirit to live inside of us!  Wow, what an unspeakable privilege.

Be a housebuilder!

Praying in the Holy Spirit is one way that I build myself up and edify myself.  If I want to be the best mom I can be for my kids, I need edification.  I need spiritual instruction.  I need to realize the presence of Holy Spirit is with me wherever I am, whatever I am doing.

So I encourage you today, be a housebuilder!  Build yourself up in your faith by using one of the tools God has given us.  I encourage you to pray in the Holy Spirit.

Jude 1:20-21 NLT “But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”
