As I stood at the front of the room full of young mothers and made the statement, “The grace-filled life is a life marked by rest,” we all couldn’t help but laugh. While wrangling toddlers, changing multiple diapers, cleaning up messes that just come right back, and tackling laundry that seems never-ending, what mother of young children has much time for rest?
Yet to rest is exactly what God’s grace is beckoning us to do.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength…” – Psalm 23:1-3
This rest of which I’m speaking may not look like taking a leisurely nap, lounging on a hammock serenaded by a tropical breeze, or even sitting down for longer than 2 minutes at a time while the sun’s still shining.
Grace is calling you to a rest of the heart. It’s a place where your spirit can be assured that Someone bigger is watching out for you and your family no matter what you are facing. It’s a Voice inside that says, “You’ll never be alone again.”
Grace frees you from striving so hard to be that “perfect” mom, wife, or friend. When you mess up (and we all do), you don’t beat yourself up over it. You take a deep breath and—rest. You rest in Him knowing you are perfect in His eyes.
Grace calls out to you, “No more competition!” You don’t get to compare yourself to the mom next door—that mom that seems to have it all together, when you can’t seem to get it right. If you could see everything that God sees, I guarantee her life isn’t as perfect as it looks anyway. She probably needs just as much encouragement as you do.
God didn’t create you to be like anyone else. He created you because He wanted you ! He loves you and He is proud of you ! You are not competing with your sisters or comparing yourself to them. When you are resting in His powerful, game-changing grace, you are confident in who God has created you to be.
You are free to be yourself. In this life marked by grace, embrace your unique gifts, talents, and personality traits because that’s who God created YOU to be.
When you rest in Him, there is no more striving. Stop trying so hard, and just let go! Let His grace invade every area where you think you aren’t measuring up. Let grace speak the truth into your heart, and begin to see yourself the way God does.
You see, graceful mama, in Christ every day is a day of vacation. We may not be sipping tropical drinks lounging in a hammock by the crystal clear Carribean, but what we do have transcends time and space. Because of God’s limitless grace, we are ever invited to rest in His finished work and in His love for us.
Today, let’s decide to rest instead of striving. The place of rest is where we’ll accomplish the most anyway.
May the grace be with you, mama!
